At Call2Print, we work with a wide variety of materials to meet the unique needs of each client. However, one of the challenges we often face is the discrepancy in material names used by different people—especially when it comes to commonly used materials in the printing and exhibition industry. This can sometimes lead to confusion and, in worst cases, costly mistakes.
Two materials we frequently encounter are Foamcore (commonly referred to as KT board) and Gatorboard (a variation of foamboard), and it's essential to clarify the differences and the common names used in different regions to avoid any misunderstandings.
What is Foamcore (KT Board)?
In the United States, Foamcore or Foam Board refers to a lightweight, rigid material made of a foam center sandwiched between two layers of paper. It's often used for signs, mounting, and display materials due to its ease of cutting and light weight. However, in the UK, it’s commonly called Foamboard. While the name differs, the material remains essentially the same.
What is PVC Foam Board?
On the other hand, PVC Foam Board is a more robust version of foamboard. It features a similar foam core, but its outer layer is made of a more durable, rigid material, often a veneer of wood or a tough paperboard. This makes it better suited for high-end applications where a sturdy, more long-lasting display material is needed. In USA, some people call it as Sintra Board - a trademark from 3A Composites, similar to when a brand refers to a product (e.g., "Coke" refers to a carbonated beverage). But in UK market, the popular name for this material is Foamex.
Why Does This Matter?
Misunderstandings about materials can happen when clients use different terminology, and it’s essential that both the client and supplier are on the same page. For instance, if a client asks for “Foamcore,” they may mean different products depending on where they’re located. In the US, they might be referring to the standard foam board, but in the UK, they could be asking for something more specific.
At Call2Print, we always aim to provide the best products at the best prices. However, ensuring that we’re all talking about the same material is crucial to avoid issues with pricing, delivery, and quality.
